Joseph Samuel Sanfilippo, 91, of Syracuse, NY, formerly of Jamestown, died Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Veterans Medical Center in Syracuse, NY.
He was born in Jamestown, NY on December 10, 1923, the son of Antonino and Antonina Cantali Sanfilippo.
He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from San Jose State University and his Master’s Degree from St. Bonaventure University. Joe was a teacher and football coach at Cathedral High School in Gallup, New Mexico, Salamanca High School and Jamestown High School.
He served with the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the MTC Sampson, NY, USS Vulcan, USS Biscayne and USS Putnam. He earned the Victory Medal, American Campaign, European African, 1 star and Asiatic Pacific, 2 Stars Medals.
He was a communicant of Holy Apostles SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church. He was also a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, VFW, American Legion and South Hills Country Club. Joe was an avid golfer and could be found on the course at South Hills Country Club. He also enjoyed his time reading to children during story hour.
Joe is survived by four children, Carl (Juliet) Sanfilippo, Baldwinsville, NY, Anne Marie (Gary) Heymann, Tully, NY, Laura (Patrick) Vogl, Cazenovia, NY,and Joseph (Valerie) Sanfilippo, Bay Village, OH. Grandchildren, Lauren & Justine Sanfilippo, Christine & Michael Heymann, Katharyn, Jillian & Andrew Vogl, Matthew & Claire Sanfilippo, and great grandchildren, Gianna Rose and Joseph Sebastian Runza.
Joe is also survived by several nieces and nephews, many who live locally.
He was preceded in death by his wife and love of his life, Rosalia Frushone Sanfilippo, whom he married on June 6, 1953 in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Silver Creek, NY and who died on February 5, 2005. He was also predeceased by his siblings Sebastian, Samuel, Mary and Grace Sanfilippo.
Friends will be received on Friday, May 8, 2015 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hubert Funeral Home and Cremation Services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Holy Apostles SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church. The Rev. Dennis Mende, pastor, and Rev. Joseph Gullo will be the celebrants. Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
