Christine Bernadette Rieg, Chris, 89, of Ashville, NY passed away April 25, 2022 surrounded by her family, due to a long illness.
She was born December 22, 1932 to parents, William F F Barnes and Helen Whitaker Barnes in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Christine graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Lawrence, MA in 1950. She married Louis E Rieg in 1956. Christine is survived by her husband Louis, son Mark (Theresa) Rieg, daughter Gretchen (Lane) Parker, 5 grandchildren: Ricky Jervah, Jennifer Jervah, Joshua (Rebecca) Rieg, Catricia Rieg, and Cassandra Rieg, 3 great grandchildren: Freddy Lamb, Christine Lamb, & Ophelia Rieg, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Christine was preceded in death by her sister Jean Weeks, brother Walter Barnes, son Damian Rieg, and infant granddaughter Victoria Rieg.
Christine was employed at Sutherlands of Lawrence as a salesperson in the toy department; she would even dress up as the Easter Bunny! She was a homemaker after marrying Louis, who she met at the Senior Ball at Notre Dame University. She taught English as a second language while living in Lagos, Nigeria, West Africa. Later, she assisted her husband doing property evaluation assessments in different New York counties.
Christine was an active volunteer in her children’s elementary school, Christ the King, in Gretna, Louisiana. She enjoyed needlework, cooking, baking, writing children’s stories, traveling and amateur photography. As she and Louis moved throughout the U. S. and overseas, square dancing helped them make new friends.
Christine was an active member of Sacred Heart Church in Lakewood, NY as a choir member, sponsor of several dinner and movie nights, and recipient of the St. Joseph the Worker Award along with her husband.
Visitation will be held at Riccardi’s Hubert Funeral Home in Jamestown, NY Friday, April 29 from 5 to 8 PM.
Christine will be honored with a Mass of Christian burial 11 AM Saturday, April 30 at Sacred Heart Church, Lakewood, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Chautauqua County Humane Society.
