Michael John McNamara, 67, of Jamestown, passed away peacefully into eternal life at 8:30 a.m. Sunday (November 6, 2016) at his residence. He was born in Altoona, Pa. on May 20, 1949 the son of the late John Bernard and Anthonene Valone McNamara. Besides his parents, he was prerceded in death by his younger brother, Kevin Philip McNamara. He was brother to Sister Katie, formerly know as Kathleen McNamara, who now lives at Mt. St. Mary’s Abbey in Wrentham, Mass as a Cisterercian Nun. Michael is also survived by his loving daughter, Amy Slayton and her husband (Scott) of Rochester, N.Y. and his stepson, Todd Paris and his wife( Bernice) of Seattle, Wa. He was a devoted grandfather to Elise and Erin Slayton, Rochester, N.Y. Michael was a former Navy Seabee, having served from Jan. 14, 1969 to August 28, 1970 and was deployed to Chu Lai, Vietnam. He earned the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service and Campaign Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon. During the years following his honorary discharge, he devotedly and lovingly cared for both of his parents, while working full time for the Jamestown Post Journal. In 2014 he was diagnosed with cancer. In spite of his illness, he continued to be there at the right time and the right place to do those little but important things for others. That and his ready smile which lifted the spirits of those who knew him, endeared him to the hearts of many. A Memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Wednesday November 9, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Apostles SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church. The Rev. Dennis Mende, pastor, will be the celebrant.
