Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Elizabeth Calanni, 58, of Jamestown, died at 11:15 p.m. Saturday (Janaury 23, 2016) in the Lutheran Home surrounded by her family. She was born in Jamestown on February 14, 1957 the daughter of James and Genevieve Reale Calanni. Mary was employed as a cashier at Bells, Quality Markets and Tops for twenty eight years, retiring in 2013 due to a disability. She was a graduate of JBC. She was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church where she taught religious education, a member of the choir and a former member of parish council. She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and the Heart Association and Future Secretaries Association. Mary would like to thank all the people who helped her collect donations for the Prevention of Child Abuse. Mary was the most loving and kind person in the world. She was the best sister, Aunt and friend you could ever ask for. She had a very strong faith in God. Her smile was radiant and would light up any room anywhere. You would see her smile and your day would instantly become bright. Her customers at the store would wait in her line (no matter how long it continued to get) just to see her and share a friendly, kind conversation that she would always carry with everyone. Mary had a very sincere love for cooking and baking from a very young age. She was extremely proud to share her family recipes with everyone and she also loved receiving new ones to try. Mary's favorite times were spent with her nieces and nephews, sister and many special friends. She loved having company at her house and cooking and baking for them. She welcomed everyone and always made you feel at home. She was the absolute best hostess in the world even until the very end. Her niece Lisa will always remember listening to Barbara Streisand, cooking, baking and playing Mary's two favorite games monopoly and canasta. Mary was so very proud to see her great niece Kaitlyn make her First Holy Communion last spring and travel to a family wedding last summer. She also was very happy to travel to Buffalo for her birthday to go to Salvatore's where she had always wanted to go. Her family is very blessed to have shared those very special days with Mary and they will cherish the memories forever and ever. Mary's great niece and nephews couldn't wait to go visit her and help her especially while she was at the Lutheran Home. They all loved her so much and knew that she loved all of them with all her heart. She is survived by a sister, Carol Proestler, Jamestown, three brother’s, Anthony and Carl Calanni, Jamestown and James Calanni, Buffalo, a niece, Lisa Markham, a great niece, Kaitlyn Markham, three great nephews, David, Roger and Zachary Markham, Jamestown. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 29, 2016 in St. James Catholic Church. The Rev. Darrell G. Duffy, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
